The October Crisis

The Virtual Historian - The October Crisis: Learning Guide for Teachers
The goal of this comprehensive case is to investigate and contextualize the series of events that led to the adoption of the War Measures Act by the federal government in October 1970. Unlike core cases, comprehensive cases engage students in deep and wide-ranging activities with a variety of sources from multiple perspectives.
Students are placed in the historical context of a virtual investigation. In all aspects of the inquiry, students are guided in the study, questioning, analysis, and evaluation of a key event in Canadian history, based upon authentic historical sources. For teaching purposes, students are invited to analyze historical sources through a set of sourcing questions that facilitates their understanding and analysis. These questions/answers will also serve in the writing of an argumentative essay (opinion/persuasive writing), as found in the mission.
