First Nations Literature
This unit contains activities for several subject areas including Language Arts, Social Studies, Dance, and Drama. It begins with an introduction to oral tradition, storytelling, and First Nations' cultural areas. Students will learn how geographic location influences the evolution of the various First Nation’s cultures and they will be required to differentiate between the different types of First Nation’s mythology. The students will also be required to examine the literature to find information about First Nation’s beliefs, values, customs, and ways of life. Following that, students will identify common themes found in the First Nation’s literature, using drama and dance to gain a deeper understanding of the First Nation’s way of life.

The students will also learn what types of characteristics make stories ideal for retelling or reading aloud. They will select their own stories to retell to their classmates. They will also examine original and adapted versions of the same tale to warm them up for an authentication project. The final section, authenticating folklore, will teach students about the important role that good research plays in communicating accurate cultural information. It will also force students to pay attention to the intricate details in the literature.

Students in each participating country anonymously fill in an online survey in class. They answer non-confidential questions about topics such as their height, the time it takes to travel to school, and their favourite subject at school. The responses become part of a national database, which is later added to an international database that is maintained in the United Kingdom.
This project combines fun with learning, to the delight of hundreds of thousands of students around the world who have already participated. The first television station went on the air in Canada in 1952. At about the same time, Canadians saw their first shopping mall and their first subway. Life in Canada was changing dramatically. It was almost as if people wanted to make up for the World War II years.
You and your classmates will act as historians and use primary sources to learn more about living in these times. Diaries, drawings, maps, newspapers, and business and government records are some of the eyewitness reports that you will examine as your main source for information and analysis.
You will begin your quest by completing a series of introductory activities, concluding by visiting primary source stations. You then will be assigned a role in a class WebQuest, where you will use primary sources to research your assignment and make reports.
The primary sources, presented in digital format, are facsimiles of original documents in the collections of the Archives of Ontario, the City of Toronto Archives and the Toronto Public Library. Includes a teacher's guide.
